FACILITIES
The Darkroom Organiser is Dave Lyon. Dave's contact details can be found here, on the "Contact Committee Members" page.DARKROOM
The club caters for both film and digital photography, and has a very well-equipped darkroom, located on the first floor of the Poldrate Arts and Craft Centre. There are two enlargers suitable for colour and black & white, chemicals, dishes and all the darkroom paraphernalia you need to produce stunning prints!
To obtain access to the darkroom, you need the key. This is stored in the keysafe, which is fixed to the wall opposite the darkroom door. To open the keysafe:
Pull the black rubber tab at the top of the keysafe towards you to release the rubber cover. Enter the combination code (available from any member of the Committee). Push down the "open" slider (the black button at top centre) and the safe will open to reveal the key. Use the key to open the darkroom. There should be no need to remove the key from the keyring. If you make a mistake entering the code, push down the "clear" slider (bottom centre) and start again. Note that to lock the keysafe, the code must be entered again.
If you have any questions about the darkroom, please contact the Darkroom Organiser.
DIGITAL
Following the award in April 2003 of a significant grant from the Awards for All scheme (funded by the National Lottery), the club was able to purchase a state-of-the-art digital video projector, a computer, a film scanner, a flatbed scanner, a printer and associated items (trolley, chairs etc).
DIGITAL PROJECTOR
The club's digital projector is a small but powerful Astrobeam X20 DLP (digital light processing) model offering 1024x768 resolution and 1100 lumens output with a contrast ratio of 800:1. It is suitable both for computer and video display.
As well as being in frequent use on club evenings when digital work is being shown, the projector is available (by arrangement) for hire by club members only, for the purposes of showing their own digital or video material at other venues. The hire charge (which is necessary to cover the cost of eventual bulb replacement) is £10 per day - however, if a member wishes occasional use of the projector for use with a community group, and where no fee is charged by the member, the £10 fee may be waived at the committee’s discretion.
There is a notebook for recording when the projector is borrowed and when it is returned. Note that to prolong the life of the projector bulb, it is vital that the projector is left plugged into the mains until the fan has stopped – this will take a couple of minutes after switching of the projector, and allows the bulb to cool down. If you are uncertain how to use the projector, please see an experienced club member, and read the instruction manual carefully.
FILM SCANNER
The scanner is a Nikon Coolscan IV ED suitable for 35mm slides and negatives. It offers 2900dpi resolution, ICE3 image correction software and a USB connection to the computer.
FLATBED SCANNER
(Information to be provided)
COMPUTER
The computer is from Silicon Group, and has a 'AMD Athlon XP2500+ processor, 1024Mb RAM and a 120Gb hard disk. It has a USB microhub, a CD R/W drive and an interface for digital camera memory devices. A full version of Photoshop CS2 is installed on the club PC and is available for use by members.
There is a spindle of blank CDs in the darkroom, which you can use to copy your scanned photos on to. The blank CDs are 20p each – please record any CDs you take in the notebook for that purpose. The Treasurer will collect the money from you at a later date.
PRINTER
The printer is a Canon i9100 A3 bubblejet unit, capable of very high quality output on both A3 and A4 paper. It has the significant advantage that the coloured ink cartridges are separately replaceable, meaning you don't have to throw away perfectly good ink simply because someone's used up all of one colour!
Supplies of A3 and A4 paper are provided. Costs of printing are as follows:
Using paper supplied by club
A4 printing, per sheet: £2.00
A3 printing, per sheet: £4.00
Please record your printing using the notebook provided for this purpose. The Treasurer will collect the money from you at a later date. Note that most of the printing cost is in the ink rather than in the cost of the paper!
Using your own paper
A4 printing, per sheet: £1.50
A3 printing, per sheet: £3.00
Please record your printing using the notebook provided for this purpose. The Treasurer will collect the money from you at a later date. Note that most of the printing cost is in the ink rather than in the cost of the paper!
