CLUB OUTINGS

FARNE ISLANDS June 2008
Having postponed the Farne islands trip on Tuesday 3rd June due to an awful weather forecast, 12 members drove down on Friday 6th and had a great time on this all-day trip. No doubt several of the pictures will feature in future competitions or as screen savers to remind folk of the puffins, terns and other wildlife we got close to. Perhaps we can organise this trip again next year. For the record, most of us got shat upon by the Arctic Terns!

PHOTO SAFARI ! June 2008

This is the email sent to club members by President Brian Robertson:

"The trip to The Farne Islands has been arranged for Wednesday 3rd June (original date of 27th May had to be changed). Ten places have been booked on the Glad Tidings which, of course, sails out of Seahouses, Northumbria. This number can be increased as long as the boat has capacity but last minute additions cannot be guaranteed.

The boat leaves harbour at 10am so I would suggest folks plan to arrive there at 9.30 - the trip is worth the early rise. The boat will take us to 2 islands where we will have 2 hours on each as well as having a look at seals.

There are no toilet facilities on the first island but there are on the second. Both islands are very exposed so even on a warm day it can be cold out there so come prepared. Also, you must bring a picnic as there are no shops!

And....bring a hat unless you like to be shat upon from a great height !

The cost for the boat is £25 and there is a landing fee of £5.20 for each of the two islands which are owned by the National Trust, unless you are a member of this (English) Trust or the National Trust of Scotland. If you are, bring your membership card.

Visit www.farne-islands.com for a sneak preview.

Names to be submitted to me please as soon as possible (by e-mail preferably). I would propose not taking money from people now but if having stated that they will go, a member then pulls out and I cannot replace them, then that member will be responsible for the £25 boat fare (if boat owner demands payment).

I have been on this trip before and I can guarantee that you will get close to several species of seabirds: sometimes closer than you want!"

Brian's contact details can be found here, on the "Contact Committee Members" page.
